The district of North Cowichan on Vancouver Island issued a tender for upgrades to two biosolids facilities in their district.
Chemainus and Crofton were to receive these upgrades. Southwell submitted a competitive quote for FRP railing, stair treads and decking to D. Robinson Contracting who won the bid to be the general contractor on this project. Southwell assisted D. Robinson Contracting by working through changes in equipment and dimensions from the original drawings to complete this project.
Project Outline
A Strategy for Easy Installation
The lightweight, side-mounted square-tube handrails used for the platforms and walkways were shipped preassembled for easy installation.
Fire Retardant FRP
The FRP resin for the project was primarily premium grade flame retardant polyester with UV inhibitors for the ladders, stair systems, and structural shapes.
Planning for Exposure to Corrosives
2” deep heavy-duty vinyl ester molded grating was used for the trenches for additional corrosion resistance, a key consideration when specifying FRP for WWTP .

Fibreglass structures are excellent for harsh environments subject to chemical exposure, such as outdoor walkways on drilling platforms, in WWTP water treatment plants, in livestock facilities and anywhere you require secure and durable walking surfaces.
